Check if your data leaked — and what to do in the first hour
Breaches are announced weekly. The response is always the same five steps.

Checklist — printable
- Check your email on a breach-notification service
- Change the password on any site where you reused it
- Secure your email account first: unique password + 2FA
- Turn on app-based or hardware 2FA, not SMS where avoidable
- Move to a password manager; generate unique passwords
- Watch for phishing emails referencing the breach
- Freeze credit if national ID numbers were exposed
Your email address has almost certainly appeared in a data breach. That's not the emergency; reusing passwords is. Attackers take leaked email/password pairs and try them on banking, email and shopping sites within hours.
The first-hour response is mechanical. Do it once, properly, and most breach notifications become background noise.
Why it matters
One reused password turns a random breach into a emptied account. One hour of hygiene removes you from the easy-target pool.
